Social Car Scheme

Do you have your own transport?
Are you able to go out and about whenever you want to?

Then perhaps you could spare a couple of hours each week, to give a lift to somebody who is only able to go out if someone takes them? Expenses are paid.

The Volunteer Centre Shipley Urgently needs drivers with their own cars to give occasional or regular lifts to people who are unable to get out on their own

Can you help?

Volunteering Bradford's Gardening Project

Volunteering Bradford, then Shipley and Baildon VB, started the Gardening Scheme. Volunteers are recruited to garden for people no longer able to do so themselves, helping them gain their very own piece of heaven on their doorstep.

Roy, a regular volunteer with the scheme, has been volunteering for 7 years. He volunteered because he enjoys physical work, but wouldn't consider himself a skilled gardener, just dedicated and committed, which makes him the perfect volunteer! He said of his experiences;-

"You see a jungle and you want to chop it down. Elderly people who have been used to keeping up to their gardens and then find they can't get very frustrated . They are really pleased when you do it . It is very rewarding when they thank you. We don't need money but some make us a nice cup of tea."

Sally - Young Volunteer

Sally Blackwell joined the volunteering programme in May 2005. She has a keen interest in horticulture, wildlife and improving the environment. With the help of the Volunteering Bradford, Sally was introduced to Bradford Environmental Education Scheme or BEES.

BEES turned out to be the perfect opportunity for Sally. Whilst volunteering she trained in ecology, pruning, planting, horticulture and dry stone walling, achieving over 200 hours volunteering, Sally said off her experience,

Sally Blackwell's winning phtograph for the Volunteering in Action catagory in the volunteers week celebrations held at The National Museum of Phtography, Film & Television."I feel I have gained skills and confidence through volunteering, in an environment with people who passed on their knowledge. I feel new opportunities have now opened up to me!"

This proved to be true for Sally as she went on to work and volunteer across the UK in various
environmental projects. She also even went on to win the Volunteering in Action category at the Volunteers Week photography competition, organised jointly by Volunteering Bradford and the Bradford National Museum of Photography, Film and Television for National Volunteers Week in June.
