Lots of people in Bradford District are Active Citizens and give up their free time to improve things.
The contributions they make are valuable and make a real difference to people’s lives. On this page, you can learn about some of these amazing people.
Crank it up
Crank It Up is a charity that aims to provide cycling opportunities for all.
It provides cycling sessions for fun, leisure, cycling skills development, social inclusion, disabled and health improvement. The project has access to a fleet of loan bikes ranging from the unusual to 2 wheel bikes as well as new electric vehicle too.
Bradford Volunteer Centre has given advice on volunteering policies, helped create volunteering roles for the national volunteering database, provided information and advice about supporting volunteers with criminal records and has directly recruited and referred ten volunteers to the service. Volunteers were also recruited to the charity through a special speed matching event held at the Volunteer Centre.
Chris Evans Chairman at Crank it Up really appreciates the support given:
“As a purely part time voluntary project who receives no regular or guaranteed income we rely on the support of our volunteers to help us work with many groups.”

Ann, May & Vera
Ann volunteers as a driver helping transport two elderly people (May and Vera) to and from a community centre.
You can read a transcript of the interview with Ann here.
Ann believes very strongly that she benefits as much by volunteering as much as the people she helps. She also recognises that the support provided by Bradford Volunteer Centre is critical to the work undertaken by volunteer drivers.
“The support Bradford Volunteer Centre gives us is very important – someone needs to organise and coordinate the work. It would be almost impossible to do this without them.
“I get a lot of satisfaction and enjoyment out of helping May and Vera. They have a lot of life experience and are fascinating to talk to.
“Driving gives my week structure, gets me out of the house and out into the community. It’s a important very important part of my life.”
