16-25? Get rewards for volunteering

Adam Glennon, 20 from Eccleshill – volunteered to build a school in Nepal – Youth Volunteering Champion – Bradford Volunteer Centre.

Until recently Adam was a local Youth Action Team Member in Bradford and acting as an ambassador to promote volunteering to young people at school, careers events and university fresher’s fairs. He was involved in leading and shaping his local youth volunteering team. Some of his work includes developing marketing and communications materials, participating in and inducting new team members and also supporting other young people into volunteering. He also went to Nepal to volunteer for 10 weeks where he helped construct a new building for a local school.

Adam Glennon said “I wanted to take a gap year before Uni and make the most of the year off, and I spoke to one of the team at the Bradford Volunteer Centre who suggested I come along to a meeting to see what it was all about. At first I was a bit nervous as I didn’t know anyone and they all got along so well, but they were really welcoming. We do lots of other things, and I’ve done lots to promote volunteering around the district like helping out at stalls and doing a talk at my old college. We were given lots of information by to make sure we were prepared for these events beforehand and it really gave me the confidence to talk about my own experiences which I did at Volunteering Bradford’s Annual General Meeting last year. Being part of the Youth Volunteer Team really opened my eyes, I hadn’t done much volunteering before but this made me realise what was out there. I even volunteered overseas in Nepal with Platform 2 which was great. I want to push myself and see how far I can go and challenge myself in a different environment. I’d never have considered this before joining the Youth Volunteering team, so I think it has definitely had a positive impact on me and the things I want to achieve in life now. I realise I can do a lot more than I thought I could, if I put my mind to it.”
